Painting: Embroidering Earth's Mantle
(detail)"Embroidering Earth's Mantle" 1961, by Remedios Varo

The Varo Registry was founded in 1996 by Robin Masi, MFA, Ed.M., Ed.D. candidate. Interested in using the then new Internet technology to promote women artists, she named the site after one of the most respected artists in the twentieth century, Remedios Varo. Permission was granted by Varo's widower, Walter Gruen, to name the site after his beloved wife and to use her images for the promotion of women artists from all over the world.

Masi is a professor, Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and an artist. Her paintings and charcoals have been featured in exhibitions in New England, California, Washington D.C. and New York. Her play Vanishing Point: Scenes from the Life of Baroque Artist Artemisia Gentileschi has been performed in Rome and New York. Masi's work includes a site-specific installation on the events around 9/11 entitled The Witness Project which was on exhibit at the Fitchburg Museum of Art, Northeastern University and Regis College's Carney Gallery. Masi received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University and her MFA from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. In 2007 she received her Ed.M. from Harvard University's Arts in Education program. She is currently attending Boston University's Ed.D. in Policy, Leadership and Education program. Masi's dissertation is entitled The Restoration of the Beautiful Soul 18th Century Moral Ideal in the Lives and Works of Six Twentieth Century Visual artists. The artists in the study are Wassily Kandinsky, Kathè Kollwitz, Jacob Lawrence, Mark Rothko, Vincent Van Gogh, and Remedios Varo. A short paper presenting an exploration of one artist, Wassily Kandinsky is attached.

The technology and search engine was developed by C.J. Holmes, original Webmaster at Sonoma State University.
